Extremely Lucky faces tough task in Moir

Exciting South Australian sprinter Extremely Lucky faces an extreme outside draw in Friday night’s Group 1 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Extremely Lucky has drawn barrier 12 in his Melbourne return after finishing third behind Bella Nipotina in the Listed Carlyon Stakes at his Victorian debut.

Trainer Will Clarken said the stable took plenty out of the performance and is confident the horse can flex his muscles against some of the top line sprinters.

“I think I’ve sorted a few things out following that last run,’’ Clarken said.

“You know in a Group 1 over 1000m at the Valley they will go quick, that could work against him given he’s going to be needing luck. It’s not a track where you can go around them, we’ve seen that in the past.

“I’ll be telling Ben (Melham) to ride for luck, try and find some gaps between them and hopefully things open up for him late. We head over expecting the worse, but hoping for the best,’’ he said.

Extremely Lucky had his final piece of work on the Morphettville course proper on Monday morning and Clarken said the horse had continued to tick all the boxes required.

“His work has been good, I think he’s progressed since last time but it’s going to be a big ask and this is another good opportunity for him,’’ Clarken said.
