Saddle fitting masterclass shines light on thoroughbred idiosyncrasies

Thorough Care SA sponsored a Saddle Fitting Masterclass at Kersbrook Equestrian Centre run by Gary Slack – a sixth generation owner of Bonnetts Saddlery – the oldest saddlery in the country and the fourth oldest in the world.

Gary spent time discussing horse anatomy and physiology and how each horse is unique, requiring a different saddle and girth. Three Thoroughbreds were in attendance, which Slack was able to demonstrate on.

Racing SA Industry Operations Manager John Cornell said those that attended enjoyed themselves and walked away with valuable information.

“Gary Slack is well recognised as one of the highest credentialed saddle fitters in the country,” said Cornell.

“It is so important for anyone who takes on a retired racehorse to make sure that you’ve got the right fitting gear which can have a huge impact on the horse’s temperament.

“It’s vital to have the correct information when saddle fitting, and that’s why we held this masterclass. We want to ensure as part of our program that encourages people to take on these horses, that they receive the correct expert advice on these sort of things,” said Cornell.

Thorough Care SA thanks those who attended the free Masterclass.
