Port Lincoln surface shines in first big test

Port Lincoln Racing Club’s refurbished surface has been given the big tick of approval leading into next month’s Cup meeting.

Racing returned on February 3 following a second break from racing due to issues with the racing surface before hosting its Cup lead-up meeting last weekend.

Leading rider Kayla Crowther rode three winners at Port Lincoln last weekend and said the track was in outstanding order given the trouble it’s had this season

“The track is in great shape, probably the best it’s been for a long time,’’ Crowther said.

“Giving it the time it needed to recover has worked brilliantly and it raced really well last weekend,’’ she said.

John Dunn and Krystal Bishop, who take a big team of horses to the west coast each season had 23 horses go around at the last meeting and said the staff and everyone involved in getting the track back deserved plenty of praise.

“The job Tommy Hull and Ian Ricardo, along with all the staff over there, has done has been fantastic,’’ Dunn said.

“They’ve done a huge job and they should be commended. I can honestly say the track surface is the best it’s been for the last four or five years.

“At the first meeting back, the track was the best I’ve seen it for a long time. And the other day a few people said it was suiting leaders, but I think if you analyse it, the better horses were racing up on speed and winning, it didn’t have anything to do with the track itself,’’ he said.

Racing SA’s Industry Track Manager Ian Ricardo said things have progressed nicely heading to what is always a massive day on the West Coast.

“The feedback we’ve received following the two meetings back has been extremely positive,’’ Ricardo said.

“The Port Lincoln Track Staff have put in a lot of hard work to get back racing and they’re looking forward to their big day in a week’s time,’’ he said.

Nominations for next Friday’s Cup meeting close with Racing SA at noon on Monday, February 27.
